The Dalai Lama made an inpromptu visit to the Derry home of his “hero’s” mother this morning.

His Holiness gave his tight security presence a headache when he suddenly decided to visit the mother of Children in Crossfire Director Richard Moore at her Ard Glen home, accompanied by his entourage.

The spiritual leader told Mr Moore’s 93 year-old mother, Flo, who was too ill to travel: “Your son is my hero, you are the mother of my hero, you are also my hero.”.

Mr Moore was blinded by a British soldier’s rubber bullet at the age of ten and has become close friends with the 14th Dalai Lama. The Tibetan spiritual leader is firm supporter of the Children in Crossfire charity which was founded by Mr Moore.

The Dalai Lama is currently speaking at a press conference at the City Hotel during his second visit to the Derry.
