Damaged underground cable sparked massive power cut
Damage to an underground cable by a contractor was responsible for the massive power outage across Derry, Northern Ireland Electricity have confirmed.
All 10,000 homes and businesses have now have power restored to them, with the final 300 properties in the Brandywell area reconnected at 4.04pm.
A spokesperson for NIE said: “NIE Networks has confirmed that contractor damage to underground electricity cables was the cause the fault affecting around 10,000 customers in the Derry area today.

Earlier today, people from different areas across the cityside and Waterside took to social media to report that their estates had been affected.
