Derry dad pulls some punches for charity

Tommy Duddy, Anthony Chen, D'Andre Chen, Dave Doherty and Dermot Doherty are gearing up for the boxing tournament this Saturday in aid of Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children.

A Derry dad has vowed to fight with a group of his mates for a charity which helped his young son cope with a cancer diagnosis.

Anthony Chen will be joined by 17 of his friends at the Delacroix Inn tonight for the event which will feature nine fights.

The amateur boxers, many of whom are local doormen, will also have the added pressure of being watched by boxing superstars Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon, who have already booked their tickets for the tournament and will be in the audience to cheer them on.

Anthony organised the tournament to raise funds for NI Cancer Fund for Children – a charity he describes as a “lifeline” - when his son D’Andre was diagnosed with leukaemia last September.

He said: “My son was only 13 when he was diagnosed and it was such a difficult time for us but NICFC stepped in and helped us not just financially but emotionally as well.

“The ward support worker took the time to talk to and spend time with D’Andre which relieved the boredom and pressure of being in hospital.

“It amazed me that people we had never met had fundraised for NICFC so they could provide this service to us. It made me determined that when D’Andre got a little better I would do something to raise money for this fantastic charity so they can provide this service to other families. I am delighted my friends have agreed to take part and I would like to extend my thanks to Tommy Duddy, Tony Smith & The Ring Amateur Boxing Club and everyone else for making this happen.”

Tickets for the event are priced at £8 each and can be purchased from A McLean bookmakers – be quick as they are selling out fast! There will also be a raffle on the night with lucrative prizes such as a hot air balloon ride and signed boxing gloves.

Anthony has received immense support from local businesses which have come on board to sponsor this event such as CENTRA – Culmore, J & K Auto Services, Discount Tyre Centre, Sandino’s Bar, Northwest Tyres, Midas Letting Agents, Celtic Bar, Lem McKinney Greyhound Transport, KMC Tyres, The Village Inn, Paolos Pizza, TK Brolly Demolition.
