Derry grave digger charged with robbing two bookie shops

A Derry City Council employee has appeared in court today accused of robbing two bookmakers in the city earlier this week.

Darren Joseph Sweeney, whose address was given on court papers as Greenwalk, faces two charges of robbery and two charges of possessing a firearm.

The charges relate to alleged incidents at McLeans Bookmakers on the Strand Road and Foyle Street on January 15.

The 34-year-old, who is employed by the council as a grave digger, was refused bail.

Sweeney was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on February 13.
