Calling all budding Kirk Hammetts... Ever wanted to learn Metallica’s guitar secrets and techniques? Well the City of Derry Guitar Festival is offering local axe wielders the cahnce to learn from ‘Metallica Riffs Library.’

The weekend long course will be tutored by Belfast guitarist and composer, Paul McMordie.

The festival runs from August 26 to 28 at University of Ulster’s Magee Campus and offers a series of masterclasses, concerts, lunchtime recitals and question and answer sessions.

This year the electric guitar features extensively due to the Metallica workshops.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore and practice some of the electric guitar techniques used by the legendary rockers Metallica. So if you know your ‘Load’ from your ‘Death Magnetic’ or don’t, but want to, then this is the course for you.

As is customary with the City of Derry Festival, the learning environment is relaxed and informal.

At the end of the workshop participating metal fans will be joined on stage by a full band to perform at the Student Gala Concert, on Sunday, August 28 at 7.30pm.

Classical and acoustic guitar courses and workshops will also run throughout the weekend with Carlos Bonnell, Matthew McAllister, Gabriel Guillen, Victoria Zhadko and Sean McTaggart.

The Festival offers local music fans more than the chance to attend concerts, participate in master classes, workshops, ensembles, all in a relaxed atmosphere.

The festival caters for players and composers of all levels and ability, irrespective of age, and is renowned for the accessibility of its tutors.

Applications are welcome from classical, acoustic, electric and flamenco guitarists of all standards.
