The ‘Journal’ asked Council for reasons why Mayor McClintock was not able to attend but no details were given.

“Unfortunately the Mayor was unable to attend the funeral service; the Deputy Mayor attended to represent the people of the City and District,” said the spokesperson.

“A number of senior staff including the District’s Chief Executive, John Kelpie, were in attendance to represent the Council.

“Council acknowledges that Bishop Daly was a remarkable man who dedicated his life to the people of the city and his memory will live on in the legacy of peace and reconciliation that he leaves behind.”

Bishop Daly was buried in a small cemetery in the grounds of St. Eugene’s Cathedral next to his predecessor, Bishop Neil Farren who was Bishop of Derry from 1939 until 1973 and who died in 1980.
