Prayers vigils are to be held in St Eugene’s Cathedral and St Columba’s Church Long Tower tomorrow night following a call by Pope Francis for Christian communities across the world to hold a day of prayer and penance for peace in the Middle East, especially Syria.
Pope Francis will be holding a prayer vigil in St Peter’s Square tomorrow night and he has asked that churches across the world do the same.
The Cathedral and Long Tower prayer vigils will take place as follows: Cathedral: 8.30pm (after the vigil Mass) to midnight. Rosary & Benediction at 11.30pm. Long Tower: 7pm (after the vigil Mass) to midnight. Rosary & Benediction at 11.30pm.
In his plea for peace Pope Francis each party “to courageously to follow the path of encounter and negotiation, and so overcome blind conflict.”
He added: “ With similar vigour I exhort the international community to make every effort to promote clear proposals for peace in that country without further delay, a peace based on dialogue and negotiation, for the good of the entire Syrian people.”
