A remarkable book of condolence which celebrates the lives of all those who contributed to republicanism in Derry is currently on show in the Sinn Fein offices in Rathmore, Creggan.

The book of remembrance was first opened to the public last year but in the last few months hundreds of names have been added.

Sinn Fein councillor, Colly Kelly, said the appeal the party made last year for people to come forward “far exceeded” their expectations.

“We made a public appeal last year when the book was launched and we knew we would get a good response but it far exceeded our expectations with over 500 names being entered.

“It was a massive undertaking to get to as many individuals and families as possible to get all the names and dates collated,” said Colr Kelly.

Each of the 550 names in the book had been carefully entered by hand and Colr. Kelly emphasised the importance of remembering everyone from in Derry involved in all strands of republicanism.

“The names are hand written into a specially commissioned book and cover all phases of the struggle from the 1920s right up the present day,” said Colr. Kelly.

“We are the first area in Ireland to do something on this scale but we felt it vitally important that it takes place in the build-up to the centenary year of the Easter Rising in 2016.

“It will be a very important historical archive and something that can be passed onto future generations.

“This year there is an added element with the 100th Anniversary of the formation of Cumann naBann.”

Colr. Kelly went on to tell The Derry Journal that those responsible for the development of the book want to hear from more people in the build up to this year’s major June commemoration.

“In the build up to this year’s major June commemoration at the end of the month we are once again asking people to bring forward the names of people who have made a contribution to the Republican struggle in Derry they want included in the book.

“People can call into the new Ráth Mór office on Eastway. Its important all details are correct and that requests are put in within the next fortnight.”
