The Japanese Popstars have been shortlisted for the 2011 Meteor Choice Music Prize best Album Award.
The Derry three piece had their album ‘Controlling Your Allegiance’ shortlisted alongside contemporaries Bell X1, Lisa Hannigan and Cashier No. 9.
Decky ‘Hedrock’ McLaughlin of the band said of the nomination: “It’s great to be nominated for a Choice Music Prize, as it shows us that we are doing something right in what we are producing. It’s a great honour to be included with other Irish artists like Lisa Hannigan, Jape, Cashier No.9 and ASIWYFA, as they have each produced amazing albums last year.
“It’s a happy time at The Japanese Popstars household thanks to the nomination.”
The awards were founded in order to celebrate, promote and showcase the best indiginous Irish music.
The album itself saw the electro-dance outfit work and record with a wide range of talent.
It boasts vocal tracks from James Vincent McMorrow, Jon Spencer, Green Velvet, The Cure frontman, Robert Smith and fellow Meteor Choice nominee Lisa Hannigan.
Decky said: “To ask the likes of Lisa Hannigan and James Vincent McMorrow to sing on there too was something we dearly wanted. And especially to properly marry the electronic world with the folk world was something that had never been done.”
The band, who have completed remixes for Beyonce, Daftt Punk and Kylie Minogue among others, continue to add to their army of fans. The band’s latest single ‘Shells of Silver,’ featuring James Vincent McMorrow, was included in hit US show ‘Gossip Girl.’
Mr. McLaughlin said of the track: “It’s a bit of a different, more laidback vibe for us and it seems to be getting a lot of love at the minute.” The band are currently in the studio preparing some new releases ,which Decky promises will be “very exciting.”
