Derry’s Millie Slater is ‘an inspiration’

Parishioners at two Derry churches have added £500 to MRI Scanner Appeal funds for the north’s only dedicated children’s hospital after being inspired by a local schoolgirl.
Archdeacon Robert Miller says parishioners at Christ Church, Culmore, and St Peter’s Church of Ireland raised the money at their recent Parish fun day and on Sunday the churches presented Derry schoolgirl Millie Slater with the proceeds.
Archdeacon Miller says Millie, who was diagnosed with the rare brain disorder Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) when she was only five, has proved to be an inspiration.
“We hear so much bad news these days.
“We are so encouraged and inspired by people like Millie and her family who turn great challenges into a way of doing something good for others,” Archdeacon Miller said.
He said over the last two years seven year-old Millie, who is a pupil at Ebrington Primary School, has faced her challenges in a way that “truly inspires”.
He said it was fitting that she should be the one to receive the cheque on behalf of the Scanner Appeal.
He also paid tribute to the fundraising efforts of parishioners.
“I am also proud of our parish family for doing their bit to help such a worthy cause.”
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) proved crucial in Millie’s fight against her illness. ADEM induces fever, fatigue, headache, nausea and vomiting, and in the most severe cases, seizures and coma.
The Children’s MRI Scanner Appeal is hoping to raise £2million that would see the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children get the potentially life saving scanner.
The Belfast hospital is the only children’s hospital in the UK without an MRI Scanner.
