Sinn FÉin in Derry have formally endorsed Foyle MLA Martina Anderson’s decision to allow her name to go forward to be considered to replace Bairbre de Brún in the European Parliament.
Derry Sinn Féin’s chomhairle ceanntear met on Thursday night to discuss Ms Anderson’s decision and chairperson Andrew McCartney the decision was taken to endorse the move.
Mr McCartney said; “The Officers and membership of Derry Sinn Féin met on Thursday to consider nominating Junior Minister, Martina Anderson MLA (Foyle) as a replacement for outgoing MEP Bairbre de Brún who is stepping down due to personal reasons.
“Martina’s willingness to allow her name to go forward was unanimously endorsed following a lively discussion on the opportunities such a move will present for Derry and the North West Region,” he said.
Mr McCartney also said he has “no doubt” that Ms Anderson will receive the backing of the party nationally. “Martina will now lobby support throughout the 6 Counties for her nomination and given her track record and personal appeal I have no doubt that she will receive the requisite endorsement to see her ratified by the Party leadership to represent the people in Europe,”
Ms Anderson thanked the party locally for their support. “I am humbled and honoured to have received unanimous support from my comrades in Derry Sinn Féin to put my name forward to an Ard Chomhairle for consideration to replace outgoing MEP Bairbre de Brún. If successful I know that I have a job to do to replace such a formidable MEP and individual as Bairbre but I am up for the challenge and I will now seek the endorsement of other Chomhairlí Ceanntear throughout the Six Counties in order that I can receive the ratification of an Ard Chomhairle.
“If successful in receiving the endorsement required I will apply myself as diligently to the job in Europe and while the MEP represents all of the people of the Six Cos., I will continue to promote Derry.”
