Derry City Council (DCC) area continued to be the council area with the highest unemployment level in the North for the month of January, according to figures released by the Department for Enterprise Trade and Investment (DETI).

Despite the fact that the number of people claiming Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA) decreased by 158 last month, the unemployment rate in the DCC area remains top with 7.7 per cent of men and women of working age claiming JSA.

On April 1 2015 DCC will cease to exist and will be replaced by the new Derry and Strabane District Council. Figures pertaining to the eight new super council areas for February 2015 also have Derry and Strabane District Council top of the unemployment pile with 7.4 per cent of the working population claiming JSA.

In terms of current council areas, four in the North West continue to top the unemployment pile. Derry, top with 7.7 per cent; Strabane in second with 6.6 per cent and Limavady comes fourth after Belfast with 5.1 per cent of the working population claiming JSA.
