Derry woman welcomes response

On Friday, the “Derry Journal” highlighted the case of the local 36-years-old who was sexually abused as a child.

The woman subsequently diagnosed with a personality disorder in her mid-twenties.

The local community worker said she had only ever wanted the appropriate help for her condition but had to date received no treatment specific to her illness.

Responding to the offer of treatment, she said: “I can’t thank the ‘Journal’ or Gerard Diver, MLA, enough for all the help and support.

“I can’t believe that after going around in circles for so long, after complaining so many times, I am now getting the appointment I had always requested.

“I could be frustrated with the process but at last I will speak to special clinical consultants in relation to my borderline Personality Disorder. It just shows you have to keep on fighting for yourself and your own mental health.”

Representations had also been made by Foyle MLA, Gerard Diver.

The local politician welcomed the latest development and stated: “The hope now is that this patient can access treatment which should be available 24/7. I have been and will continue to lobby for more resources locally in order that patients will not have to go public, or threaten to go public in order that they can access medical services which should be available as a right.

“This just goes to show that the expertise required was available locally all along but demand continues to outstrip resources.”

Mr. Diver said the issue of access to mental health services was raised regularly at his Waterside constituency office.
