Pedestrians who are crossing the Foyle Expressway to use the footbridge without using the pelican crossing are “dicing with death”, Sinn Féin councillor Colly Kelly said.
Colr. Kelly said; “Since the Peace Bridge opened last weekend the area in around the entrance at the Foyle Expressway has been extremely busy with thousands of people visiting there on a daily basis. A number of concerns have been raised by motorists and those visiting the bridge that a small number of people are not using the pedestrian crossings at the back of the Guildhall and at Water Street to cross the expressway.
“They have reported to me people running across four lanes of traffic, in some cases people pushing prams, and that there have been a number of near misses. At peak times of times, particularly on Saturday, this is a very busy road with a speed limit of 40mph. Anyone not using the crossing is dicing with death or serious injury. I would appeal to use the pedestrian crossings.”
