Diocesan clerical changes announced

Father Michael Canny is to move parishes to the Waterside as part of the annual diocesan clerical changes.

The Bishop of Derry, Dr Séamus Hegarty, has announced that Father Canny Adm Templemore (St Eugene’s and St Columba’s), will be PP Glendermott (Waterside) and Adm, Strathfoyle, a parish he previously spent 12 years ministering in.

Other changes include Rev. Paul Farren, Director of Diocesan Catechetical Centre and Priest-in-Residence, Glendermott, to become Adm Templemore (St Eugene’s and St Columba’s) while Father Colum Clerkin will become PP at Culmore and Vicar Forane of the Derry City deanery.

Father Stephen McLaughlin, PP St. Mary’s, Creggan, will take leave for one year in order to complete studies and will be replaced by Rev Thomas Canning, CC Drumragh (Omagh)

Rt. Rev Mgr. Ignatius McQuillan, Priest-in-Residence Ardmore Rev. Joseph O’Conor, PP Badoney Upper (Plumbridge will retire.

Rev. Patrick Doherty, PP Glendermott (Waterside) and Adm, Strathfoyle will become PP at Maghera. and Rev. Seamus Kelly, PP Culmore (Parish of the Assumption), is to be PP at Ballinascreen.

Rev. Brian Donnelly, PP Ardstraw West and Castlederg, to be PP Badoney Upper (Plumbridge) and Father Colm O’Doherty, CC Ardstraw West and Castlederg, to be PP Ardstraw West and Castlederg.

Rev. Paul McCafferty, in addition to existing duties, will be Chaplain, University of Ulster (Magee).

In today’s column in the Sunday Journal (see page 14) Father Canny said: “I have really enjoyed my time at St Eugene’s despite many challenging days. I am moving on with very pleasant and happy memories and pray that God gives me the health and strength to serve him to the best of my ability in my new appointment.”
