Lisfannon beach is like a dump these days - rubbish strewn everywhere, dog fouling where children are playing on sand, abandoned deckchairs, lilos. And no one seems bothered.

That’s according to local woman Valerie Wylie who told the ‘Journal’ that she collected two bags of rubbish at the entrance to the beach on Tuesday night ‘and it didn’t even make a dent in it.”

Ms Wylie said she was incensed by the attitude of many of those using the beach this week who simply got up and left their rubbish behind them.

“There were Spanish kids down walking the beach on Tuesday night and I felt ashamed of the place.

“I have easily been in 20 countries in my life but I have never seen one like this.

“The old rule ‘if you bring it to the beach you bring it home’ doesn’t seem to apply anymore. What really annoyed me too is that as I was lifting the rubbish a man walked his dog right in front of me.

“The dog did its poop right in front of me but the man walked on as if it had nothing to do with him.”

Valerie Wylie said while a lot of Inishowen people tend to place the blame for the rubbish dumping on visitors

from Derry she said that was far too simplistic.

She explained: “There were plety of ‘DL’ registrations at Lisfannon. Not all of them were from Derry.”
