Buncrana was a popular wee town in the 1950s, 60s and 70s; people flocked there in their droves.
Among the many attractions the town had to offer were the beach, the drink, the football and of course, the opulent Plaza Ballroom.
The Plaza Ballroom Buncrana was one of the most popular ballrooms in Donegal during the heady days of the Showband era. All the top Showbands of the day played there to sell-out crowds. People came from every village in Donegal and special buses brought scores of Derry people to dance nights in the Plaza.
Of course, thousands of marriages emanated from those dances, and the old ballroom holds only the fondest of memories for countless numbers of people.
Barely a conversation passes without people (of a certain age!) bringing up the subject of the Plaza Ballroom.
The atmosphere in the ballroom was always electric, and dancing on that famous ‘springing’ floor invokes so many memories to so many people.
Once again the old famous hall will soon be filled with the big brass sound of a nine-piece Showband, playing all the favourite songs of the 1960s and 70s. This special occasion will be the first-ever Plaza Ballroom reunion dance and will be held in the Plaza Ballroom on Saturday, September 17.
Derry’s last Showband, the Foyle Showband, will be reforming to play on this historic night of Showband nostalgia.
This nine-piece band from Derry, who played to sell out crowds at the City Hotel in Derry recently, are looking forward to their visit to the Plaza.
The same Showband drew massive crowds to the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny when playing at the Fiesta reunion dance there some years back.
This is a night for people to renew old friendships with people they may not have seen in over 40 years.
In other words, a night not to be missed. Tickets priced at 10 Euro, are now on sale from P.J. Newsagents on William Street, Derry, Clifford’s Shop, Shantallow, Derry, and Mac’s Newsagents and Green Bay House, both on Main Street Buncrana.
