Sinn Fein election candidate in Inis Eoghain Albert Doherty has highlighted the need for the provision of a safe pedestrian crossing and the need for the Co. Council to undertake remedial traffic works to facilitate an improved traffic flow for motorists at the Station Rd. and Bridge St junction in Carndonagh
Speaking this week Mr Doherty said local community groups and individuals have contactedhim and shared their concerns about the dangers for pedestrians at this very busy junction. He pointed out that the Church Rd.and Bridge St.traffic flow on to Station Rd.is a principal traffic route through Carndonagh.
He commented: “Adjacent to the junction are a number of retail outlets,a local supermarket, post office and printing works.
“Nearby also is a local primary school and the Carndonagh Community School.
“Shoppers and scholars, young and old must negotiate a safe crossing at a wide junction with no safety stop (half-way) and no caution or drive with care warnings urged for on coming motorists.
He went on: “”There is a dire need for the provision by the Co. Council of a secure pedestrian refuge at this junction. The winter evenings, long nights and busy Christmas period again reinforce the need for urgent action at this junction.Motorists also require assistance and improved vision lines may also be required.I have raised these issues previously with my party colleague Cllr.Murray and I will contact local rds.engineers requesting priority council attention to the matter”Mr.Doherty concluded.
