‘Don’t use toilets as bins’ - urges Derry SDLP councillor

SDLP Derry City Councillor Brian Tierney is appealing to residents in Galliagh not to use their toilets as a means to dispose of nappies and other unwanted items.

The appeal comes as NI Water spent yesterday morning clearing blocked drains at homes in Glencaw Park and Leafair Gardens.

Councillor Tierney said: “The problem first arose on Tuesday and, since then, it appears to have worsened.

“Thankfully, NI Water crews were out this morning and spent considerable time clearing drains blocked with a variety of items, including nappies.

“While the matter has been resolved now, I would appeal to residents to act responsibly and not to use their toilets as a bin for unwanted personal and household items.

“The problem caused a disgusting smell in the area. Homeowners should know better. Don’t use toilets as bins and, in future, dispose of items responsibly.

“I would like to thank NI Water for the work in the area, especially in such miserable weather conditions.”
