SDLP councillor Mark H Durkan has given his support to calls to bring the Fleadh Cheoil na h’Éireann to Derry in 2013.
The councillor made the call amid a growing campaign to bring the music festival to the city as part of the City of Culture celebrations in two tears time.
Colr. Durkan said; “The all-Ireland Fleadh is a major cultural and social event on this island. It attracts musicians and music lovers not just from all across Ireland but from across the world.
“Last year’s event was held in Cavan and I am aware from speaking to people there that the fleadh had a huge positive impact through the many thousands visitors it brought to the town.
“It would be a great coup if Derry were to host the fleadh as it has never been held in the North previously. Obviously, the significance of 2013 is that we will be the City of Culture.”
