Foyle MLA, Mark H. Durkan, is the latest politician to call for welfare reform minister, Lord Freud, to resign
Mr. Durkan reacted angrily to comments made by the Conservative party peer that people with disabilities are “not worth the full wage”.
Lord Freud’s comments were made at the Conservative party conference earlier this month.
Speaking after Lord Freud said disabled workers were “not worth the full wage” and could work for “£2 an hour”, Mr Durkan said;
“Lord Freud should immediately resign or be removed from government following his shocking and frankly disgusting comments about paying those with disabilities less than the national minimum wage. This is direct discrimination against the most vulnerable in our society, who should be given more incentive and help to get into work rather than being viewed and consequently treated like second class citizens.”
Mr. Durkan, who is also the Environment Minister in the North, suggested Lord Freud’s comments were a snapshot of the true narrative of the Tory party.
“Not only do Lord Freud’s comments anger the SDLP and other right minded people and groups, they worry us more. These comments clearly indicate the real thinking within the Tory government and as Freud is the architect of the welfare cuts agenda, they go a long way to revealing how the government is intent on hitting the most vulnerable in society without even a pang of conscience.”
