Durkan to meet Lord Freud on Welfare Reform Bill

Foyle MP Mark Durkan will meet with the British government’s welfare minister Lord Freud next week to discuss the controversial Welfare Reform Bill.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Durkan said he would be making a case for Derry. “It must be fully recognised by Lord Freud and the British government that we have very particular circumstances in Derry and throughout the North – not least because of the fact that the Troubles have left a legacy of mental illness and social deprivation here.

“The government’s proposals will have a disproportionate impact on people in Derry in comparison to other areas,” he said.
