Star of stage and screen Sir Ian McKellan will be honoured by the University of Ulster in Derry this weekend.

The acclaimed actor - best known for his roles as Gandalf in the film versions of Tolkein’s Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men - will recieve an honorary doctorate at the University’s Magee campus on Sunday.

Sir Ian , who will receive his honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster’s Chancellor and his ‘Hobbit’ co-star Dr James Nesbitt, will also be delivering the annual Chancellor’s Lecture to an invited audience on the subject of ‘Acting and Activism’.

It is the first time the Chancellor’s Lecture has been delivered at Magee and Sir Ian will be following in the footsteps of the distinguished jurist Baroness Kennedy, the respected journalist and broadcaster Jon Snow, the then Irish President Mary McAleese, the Lord Chief Justice for Northern Ireland Sir Declan Morgan and the Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
