Gaelscoil Neachtain for Dungiven

East Derry Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has welcomed the announcement by Education Minister John O’Dowd of his approval of the development proposals for Gaelscoil Neachtain in Dungiven.

Mr Ó hOisín said: “This is a culmination of decades of hard work to re-establish Irish as a living language in the Dungiven area and I pay tribute to all those involved especially since 1996 when the first Naiscoil pupils were enrolled.

“I would also thank the principal, staff and pupils of St Canice’s who have hosted the Irish Medium stream since 2003 and sincerely hope that the two schools can work together in a progressive and co-operative manner.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity on a prime educational site to consolidate and expand on the language project in Dungiven and indeed wider afield. It will have its challenges but it will also have its rewards and to the incoming 80 or so pupils and staff I say ‘Go n-eiri an bóthar libh’.”
