A Derry head girl has made history this week becoming the first pupil from St Mary’s College to secure a place at Oxford.

Amazing Grace McGowan passed A-level English Literature, History, Politics and Religion to achieve a place to read English at the prestigious university.

Speaking to the ‘Journal Grace said: “I’m ecstatic. I hope that I’ll make everyone proud.”

Grace joined other successes including Foyle College’s Niamh Spence and Thornhill’s Aife Mullan and Stacey McIntyre who amassed a remarkable 16 A and A* grades among them.

Foyle College pupil, Niamh Spence, achieved four A* grades and a place to study medicine at Cambridge University .

The Waterside teenager studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths and French.

Thornhill girls Stacey and Aife are off to study Biomedical Science at Queen’s and Medicine at Glasgow respectively. Aife was the school’s highest achiever with A*s in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Physics.
