Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has called on the Department of Employment and Learning to make more resources available for those young adults living with a learning disability.
Mr. Ramsey, who is the SDLP spokesperson on employment and learning and chair of the All Party Group on learning disability, voiced his concerns at a NI Assembly debate on Monday. Calling on DEL to support young people with special needs, particularly those aged 19, who have completed their formal education, Mr Ramsey said: “Those who find themselves without the support must be afforded it in order to bridge the transition to post-education.
“This issue is nothing new, as this gap was identified in previous reports. The focus must be on the needs of the individual and must have input from families, who have the best understanding of the needs of their child.
“While DEL cannot fulfil all these roles alone, the Minister can address staffing and resource issues.
“The benefit that employment and training can give to young people can be enormous not only for their skills, but also for their personal development and that is something we should all be encouraging.”
