Derry’s economic development depends on the expansion of the Magee campus, SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has told DEL Minister Stephen Farry.

Mr Eastwood spoke to the Minister during a meeting of Derry’s Strategy Board after consultants presented a detailed business case for the expansion of the UU campus.

Mr Eastwood told the Minister that the evidence gathered painted a very clear picture of the necessity to prioritise the expansion project to boost Derry’s economic growth.

“It was important that the Minister was in Derry to hear the full case for the expansion of Magee. As far as we in the SDLP are concerned, the case for expansion of the university was well made 50 years ago. We are living with the legacy of a failure to deliver university expansion then and continue to suffer from the failure of the Executive to deliver it today.

“There has been no commitment in the Programme for Government for the expansion of Magee which formed a key part of Derry’s ‘One Plan’. The expansion must be a key priority for the Executive as it will be a catalyst in transforming Derry into a thriving regional economic driver.”
