The new vice chancellor at the University of Ulster must make the expansion of Magee an urgent priority, Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin has warned.

The UU has now confirmed Professor Paddy Nixon (47) will replace Richard Barnett, who retires in March after nine years in post.

Liverpool native Professor Nixon will join UU in July from the University of Tasmania. He has previously worked at UCD in Dublin.

Ms McLaughlin said: “The expansion of Magee remains a catalyst for the regeneration of the city and indeed the wider North West. Progress has been made in this regard but much more is needed to be done.

“I have been in direct contact with the new Vice –Chancellor and we look forward to working with him to advance these important expansion plans.”
