Education Minister, John O’Dowd, has approved a Development Proposal to close Altnagelvin Hospital School and Tuition Service.

Commenting on the decision, Mr O’Dowd said: “For many years, Altnagelvin Hospital School and Tuition Service provided educational support to pupils with medical conditions in the Altnagelvin Area Hospital. There is no longer a requirement for this service as alternative services are in place and children no longer routinely remain in hospital for more than five days, therefore the Western Education and Library Board has brought forward this proposal for closure.

“I would like to pay tribute to all those connected with Altnagelvin Hospital School and Tuition Service who over many years have shown their commitment and dedication to supporting those children availing of their services.”

The Minister continued: “As well as providing support to pupils being treated in the hospital, the Altnagelvin School and Tuition Service also provided alternative education provision for pupils aged 11-16 who have medical, social, emotional or behavioural difficulties and are unable to have their needs met in mainstream schools. This provision will continue to be delivered by the Western Education and Library Board through a centrally managed service that has enhanced consistency throughout the Board area.”
