There was rapturous applause last Thursday evening in Moville when the Scoil Eoghain Girls came back as Alliance Cumann na Bunscoil Divison Two champions.
After defeating Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala from Donegal Town in Convoyby 3-5 to 0-2 points, the primary school girls were ecstatic to be crowned champions.
And everyone at Moville’s Scoil Eoghain was equally happy!
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ yesterday, Mrs Catriona Doherty, the sixth class teacher who teaches most of the girls, said everyone was very proud of them.
“All the hard training paid off. The girls trained every week with me since the confirmation in February and some trained on Saturdays as well with Moville GAA club.
“They all worked really hard and pulled together as a team. Everyone here at the school is really proud of them. They are definitely a team to watch for the future.”
Mrs. Doherty said there was a great buzz in Covoy when they won, and all the girls were delighted.
“There was a good crowd of supporters up on the day, a lot of parents came up to cheer them on. And when we came back there was a great crowd at the school waiting on them. Thanks to everyone who came along.”
As well as the parents, the team had great support from people from all members of the community.
“I would like to thank Moville GAA for the use of their grounds and equipment, and to everyone who helped with the weekend training,” said Ms. Doherty. “Also, the Cumman na Bunscoil Committee, especially Manus O’Donnell, were a great help and thanks also to Anthony Craig who filmed the match and gave all the girls a DVD copy of the game.”
She added: “The girls would like to thank the boys team in the school for letting them train and play against them every week. They were a great support for the girls as well.”
School captain and full forward, sixth class pupil, Michelle Logue, who scored three goals and two points, said the whole team were over the moon with the win.
“We were all delighted with the win and everyone played really well. I’m happy with the whole team.”
