Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey yesterday submitted a petition with the signatures of 500 people opposed to the closure of the nursery facility at the Magee campus, to Stormont

Speaker, William Hay, accepted the petition on behalf of the Assembly.

SDLP Employment and Learning spokesperson Mr Ramsey said; “Parents are very worried, nursery provision provides a vital social investment while job losses will clearly have an impact.

“I am in continuous contact with parents and staff concerned at the move. Parents value the services, closure would cause considerable inconvenience and hardship. In particular, it occurs to me that with the increasing emphasis placed on early years intervention and the need for stronger childcare provision, alongside the anticipated expansion of the Magee campus, it would be a retrograde step for the University to downgrade or privatise its Day Nursery.

“I am requesting that senior management at the University of Ulster again look at these proposals and I am urging that the University seek alternatives.”
