A car belonging to an elderly couple was found burnt out after it had been stolen and set on fire.
The ‘Journal’ understands the car was stolen in the Whitehouse Park area on Sunday night or the early hours of Monday morning.
It was found burnt out near the Collon Lane a while later.
Sinn Féin Councillor for the area, Sandra Duffy, condemned those responsible.
“This is an absolutely disgraceful act and should not have happened. The couple were awoken from their beds by the police to be told that their car had been stolen and found on fire in the Collon Lane area. Obviously it has come as a great shock to this couple and their family. They rely on this car to get about. Now they are left with the problems of trying to get a replacement vehicle and all the hassle that comes from sorting out insurance,” said Colr. Duffy.
Colr. Duffy went on to call on anyone with information about the theft to contact the PSNI.
“Sadly, there were a couple of other thefts and attempted thefts in the Whitehouse Park overnight and there has been a number of similar incidents across the city in the past week. I am aware of one car which was taken from outside a house in Elmvale, Culmore and found burnt out in Sheriff’s Mountain a number of hours later.
“I would appeal to anyone with even the slightest piece of information in regards to those behind these despicable criminal acts to bring it forward straight away,” said Colr. Duffy.
