An emotional Mark Durkan paid tribute to his SDLP colleague Pat Ramsey in his acceptance speech in Templemore Sports Complex in the early hours of Friday morning.

Mr, Durkan was re-elected as MP for Foyle with an impressive 17.725 votes.

After it was confirmed that Mr. Durkan, who first became an MP in 2005, had been re-elected he went on to single out party colleague, Pat Ramsey, for praise.

“I’d like to thank Pat Ramsey who is here despite the fact he is facing a grave family illness,” said Mr. Durkan emotionally.

“But Pat was unsparing in the effort that he put into the campaign - even today at a very sensitive and emotional time.”

Mr. Durkan went on to say that his thoughts were with Mr. Ramsey’s brother, Noel Ramsey, who is a former Chairman of the SDLP in Derry.

“I am delighted with how the campaign has worked out and I will represent every single person in this constituency - even the ones who didn’t vote for me. Why? Because that’s my job,” added the newly elected MP.
