Buncrana’s Mayor and election candidate, Councillor Peter McLaughlin, has expressed his concern at the high numbers of young Inishowen people not on the electoral register.
Councillor McLaughlin told the Journal he had been speaking to a number of young people in the 18-24 age group, who are not eligible to vote in the forthcoming local elections.
He attributed the figures to the lack of County Council staff “on the ground.”
He said: “As I’ve been canvassing on the doorsteps across Inishowen, I’ve been left deeply concerned at the high number of young people not registered to vote. The biggest problem area seems to be in the 18-24 age group.
“At one time, rent collectors and other Council officials were working ‘on the ground.’ They were able to place people on the electoral register and that’s not the case now. It’s a big loss to the area and needs to be addressed.”
