End in sight for flood hit residents

SDLP Councillor Gerry Mullan has described a decision by the Rivers Agency to designate a water course to Category A after its malfunction had caused several near misses to flooding in Dungiven as 'highly significant'.

Colr. Mullan met on Thursday with the Rivers Agency and local residents from Glenroe, Curragh Road and Greenhaven in Dungiven where the ongoing threat of house flooding was discussed.

“Officials representing the Rivers Agency disclosed this issue had now been given Category A status which means the watercourse will be checked every week and in addition more often during any future storms. Further remedial work will take place along the water course including the removal of debris which had been the main cause of culverts being blocked,” said Colr. Mullan.

“This has been a long-running struggle to bring to an end the practice of residents setting their alarm clocks during the night to check on water levels outside their homes. I regard the measures undertaken by Rivers Agency to be highly significant.”
