Work to decontaminate Fort George in Derry is unlikely to start before the end of this year.
SDLP MLA for Foyle, Colum Eastwood asked the Minister for Social Development, Mervyn Storey for an update. The minister responded: “Decontamination works on Fort George cannot start until Outline Planning Permission is secured for the Fort George Development Framework. My Department is working closely with the Department of the Environment and the Department of Regional Development to resolve the outstanding issues. I am hopeful that the Outline Planning Permission will be secured before the end of 2014.
“The decontamination works themselves are expected to take between 12 and 18 months to procure and complete. I hope that the excellent arrangements and relationships which have been established between the new Council and my Department will continue as we work together to determine the strategy and timetable for the remediation of Fort George.”
