Industrial site blaze in Derry - crane loader fire had spread to nearby containers

A fire which spread from a crane loader to containers at a Derry industrial estate earlier today is believed to have started accidentally, fire-fighters have said.

A total of seven fire appliances attended the incident at Maydown- three from Crescent Link Fire Station, two from Northland Fire Station, one from Limavady Fire Station and one from Maghera Fire Station.

Video footage of large plumes of thick smoke have been circulating on social media today after witnesses reported a loud bang at around 10am.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service confirmed this afternoon: “Firefighters were called to a fire at Clooney Road, Derry/Londonderry this morning.

“A crane loader was on fire, and had spread to nearby containers. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets to extinguish the fire.

“The incident was under control by 1.38pm and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition.”

The incident comes just weeks after a large fire at a warehouse in Foyle Port in the same region.
