Pollution has been found in a Faughan tributary near the waste facility closed down amid claims of “immense” illegal dumping.

City Industrial Waste had its licence revoked following a year long investigation by Department of Environment officers into suspected illegal dumping on the Mobuoy Road site.

In one of his last acts as NI Environment Minister, Alex Attwood said extensive monitoring of the Faughan area had been initiated following the discovery of the illegal waste. “To date no significant water quality impacts in the River Faughan have been identified through this monitoring programme, although pollution of a tributary that flows past the formerly licensed waste management facility has been detected - enforcement action in relation to this will form part of the wider investigation,” he said in answer to an Assembly Question tabled by Green Party leader Steven Agnew.
