Northland Sinn Féin councillor Eric McGinley has condemned those responsible for illegal dumping in the Ballymagroarty area.
Colr. McGinley was speaking after a number of items, including bin bags and a garden shed were dumped throughout the area at the weekend.
“In recent days there has been a significant increase in the number of black bags being dumped indiscriminately in the Ballymagroarty area,” he said.
The Colr. said there is no excuse for illegal dumping. “Needless to say these bags are creating an unsightly mess on the streets and green field sites.
“Whilst we are aware that Derry City Council’s new procedures for refuse collection have resulted in a small number of bins not being emptied this should not be seen as a reason to discard extra refuse in the area or to use other people’s bins without consent.
“If residents find that their bins have not been emptied because they are overflowing they should make contact with Derry City Council and inform staff of the situation. The Council will also make particular arrangements for anyone with special medical or health needs who requires additional refuse services.
“I would appeal to residents to work with Derry City Council to ensure that refuse collections are carried out as efficiently and to keep the area as clean as possible,” he said.
