The fact that no dogs were destroyed in council facilities in Derry and Strabane has been welcomed.

The Dog Control Team report brought before the Council’s Health and Community Committee this week revealed that during the month of May there were 17 stray dogs impounded, seven of which were reclaimed.

There were another eight unwanted dogs collected by the council, but all strays and unwanted dogs were sold on or rehomed.

A total of 15 fixed penalty notices were issued to dog owners, while 30 neutering vouchers were issued.

SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack welcomed the fact that no dogs were destroyed in May, but said that people needed to be more responsible about dog ownership. A lot more could be done by individuals with regard to fouling and having respect for communities and neighbourhoods,” she said.

SDLP Councillor Patsy Kelly also queried whether the council was doing any out of hours patrolling.

“This is when most dog fouling is taking place,” he said.
