Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed moves to abolish mobile roaming charges across the European Union.
Martina Anderson said: “Cuts to roaming charges contained in EU legislation which will benefit those travelling across EU borders as well as inter-state businesses are now in effect but with the passing of these landmark new rules, people can look forward to roaming charges being abolished across the EU from 2015.
“This development will be welcomed by tourists and business people alike as they will no longer have to worry about incurring extortionate additional charges while travelling anywhere in the EU.
“In spite of a strong lobbying effort from large telecom companies, the European Parliament chose to protect consumers’ access to high quality internet and mobile services at reasonable cost rather than service rProviders increased profits.
“I will continue to keep a close eye on the activities of service providers to ensure attempts to recoup any revenue by other means or increased charges does not go unnoticed.”
