European Youth Capital winner to be announced

Young people have been invited to come together on Wednesday as Derry and Strabane find out whether they have secured the coveted title of European Youth Capital for 2019.

Gatherings are to take place at a number of locations throughout the council area in time for the announcement.

A local delegation has already travelled to Varna in Bulgaria for the announcement, which will be made tomorrow evening at a meeting of the European Youth Forum’s Council of Members.

Back at home four ‘Our Space’ locations are being organised at Waterloo Place in Derry’s city centre, the Diamond Centre in Claudy, Strabane Youth Resource Centre and the Derg Valley Leisure Centre Castlederg from 6.30pm until 8pm to hear the announcement, with pizza and music at each venue.

Mayor Hilary McClintock urged young people to come along to the events, adding: “I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this campaign. It has unlocked huge creativity and passion. Our young people have done us proud.”

Thousands of young people have helped shaped the local bid during a 15-month long campaign. Derry~Strabane is vying for the title against Manchester, Amiens in France, Novi Sad in Serbia and the Italian city of Perugia.

Derry City & Strabane District Council’s Director of Legacy Oonagh McGillion, also paid tribute to local young people.

“Their energy has been building and building throughout the campaign and their programme ideas are underpinned by a great desire for inclusion, strong emotional wellbeing, a shared voice, employment and creativity,” she said.
