Valerie Watts has been appointed to the North's top health job.

A former chief executive of Derry City Council is to take over as the North’s top health official.

Valerie Watts has been appointed the new chief executive of the Health and Social Care Board.

Ms Watts was chief executive of Derry City Council between July 2008 and November 2010. She was the local authority’s first ever female boss.

She is expected to take up her new post at the start of July.

During her time in Derry, she worked on the regeneration plan for the city and helped with the bid as Derry became the first UK City of Culture in 2013.

“I am delighted to take up the post,” she said this week of her new job.

“The health and social care system is on a journey of change and much has been achieved to date to ensure we have safe, quality and sustainable services now and into the future.

“I am looking forward to continuing this work, in conjunction with a wide range of partners.”
