Exposed asbestos not yet removed
Sheets of asbestos-laden roofing removed from The Plaza in Buncrana last week have not yet been taken away from the site and are still open to the elements, the 'Journal' has learnt.
Despite confirmation that a number of state agencies have been made aware of the problem, it was confirmed yesterday afternoon that the materials are still on the roof of a neighbouring building, and are only partially covered by plastic.
A number of local residents and business owners have contacted the 'Journal' over the last few days, expressing concern that particles may be spread by high winds, creating a health hazard.
An official at Buncrana Town Council said they contacted Environmental Officers at Donegal County Council as soon as they were made aware of the situation, and have been keeping in touch with them on a regular basis to monitor progress.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said yesterday that the local authortiy "is reluctant to discuss the details of any single investigation."
However, the official explained that, in general, the removal of asbestos concrete roof sheeting must be carried out in a manner that is approved by the HSA (Health & Safety Authority). The HSA are the competent authority in this regard and Donegal County Council defer to the HSA in the event of such an occurrence."
An HSA spokesperson also confirmed that it had carried out an inspection of the site and said the matter is being dealt with.
"There will be follow up, I can assure you," he said yesterday. "If anyone is worried, I would ask them to contact the HSA directly and we will ensure that their concerns are acted upon."
He also explained that, under the Waste Management Act, 1996, it is the role of Donegal County Council to ensure that once the sheets of asbestos roofing have been removed safely that they are stored, stacked, wrapped and sent on for correct disposal.
