Several Derry families have been forced to leave their homes after overnight flooding.

Around two feet of water caused massive damage to eight houses in the Lincoln Courts area of the Waterside.

The Water Service has said that a burst water main in the early hours of this morning was the cause of the flooding.

A spokesperson for NI Water said: “We realise this has been a difficult experience for the families affected and apologise for the inconvenience we know this has caused.”

Resident Alan Curley said that a pensioner alerted the families about the flooding.

“She banged on each of our doors and to be honest I thought she had been robbed. When I came downstairs the water was around two feet deep and gushing right through the house.

“My five-year-old daughter was terrified. We are absolutely devastated and can’t possibly put a price on the damage because so many photos and mementos are ruined.”
