There were celebrations in Greencastle at the weekend as a local woman was a big winner in the first show in 2016 of the National Lottery’s ‘Winning Streak’ TV gameshow.
Mary McClenaghan (33) appeared on the hit show on behalf of her mother Maureen McClenaghan (65) and won prizes to the value of €54,000, including a holiday to Stockholm valued at €3,000.
Mary had already won the holiday and 27,000 euro in cash before she was chosen to spin the Winning Streak wheel, following which she won an extra 24,000 euro.
Hosts Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy heard how Maureen McClenaghan is originally from nearby Moville but has lived in Greencastle for 35 years.
She has been married to Jim for 45 years and they have four daughters and one son.
Maureen, who bought her three-star winning ticket in Centra, Moville, is a full-time carer for her 28-year-old daughter Charlene. Her three other daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Bridgeen all live in Greencastle while her son James lives in Melbourne, Australia with his wife Lisa and their two children, Finn and Harriet. Maureen has eight grandchildren in total including a set of triplets.
Mary McClenaghan has been married to her husband John McDaid for 10 years. They have a five-year-old daughter Lily, who delighted in waving to the TV cameras on the show.
Mary works with John in his restaurant ‘Inish Fusion’ in Moville. Before that, she worked for the Lough Foyle Ferry Company in Greencastle which, until recently, was operated by her father Jim.
Maureen told the National Lottery that she has no plans for her winnings as yet but her daughter Mary is hoping the family will go to Australia.
Mary was cheered on in the audience of ‘Winning Streak’ by a large contingent of family and friends.
They included her mother Maureen, her uncle John, her aunt Kate Kavanagh, her sister Elizabeth and Maureen’s cousin, Maura. Her father Jim and sister Charlene watched the show at home.
Maureen’s lifelong friends, Annette McCormick, Mary Keogh, Susannah Farren and Eileen Gormley, were also in the audience.
Maureen is the latest in a number of players from Inishowen to appear on the show, which enjoys huge ratings on RTE.
She was one of five players from Tipperary, Mayo, Cork, Donegal and Galway to appear on Saturday night and they all won prizes to the value of €175,000.
Maureen later received her winnings from Harry Cooke, Head of Corporate Affairs, Head of Finance at the National Lottery and the show’s hosts.
