Heartless thieves have stolen money saved by a family for their holiday of a lifetime during a robbery on Tuesday night.

The robbers forced their way into a home into Tamneymore Park while the family were out to dinner, stealing thousands of pounds worth of jewellery and a sum in cash.

Helena Fox said her family have been devastated by the robbery and revealed how the thieves bizarrely sprayed the items they touched in the house with bleach.

The fridge and freezer doors were left open and a chair was left up against the sink.

“They forced their way in through the patio doors which were locked,” she said.

“I went to check my bedroom and all my rings were gone, and my gold chains.

“They knew what they were looking for because they left all my costume jewellery.”

The Derry woman revealed how her engagement ring, eternity ring, trilogy ring, and rings of immense sentimental value belonging to her late mother and aunt had been stolen.

“My aunts rings were very small and would be very distinctive,” she said.

“My daughter’s baby bangles were taken from her room but they were left in the office. Maybe it was because her name was engraved on them.”

The family revealed that they had been saving for a dream holiday to Canada and all the cash had been stolen.

Police say a red car was seen in the proximity of the burglary that occurred between 6pm and 9pm on Tuesday. A large sum of cash was stolen, along with several expensive items of jewellery including some with sentimental value.
