The last thing any aspiring entrepreneur wants to do is make a dog’s dinner of their new venture but, it seems to be working out just fine for one Ballykelly woman.

Rachel Dooey is creating tasty dog-friendly treats for her four-legged clients at her dog bakery in Ballykelly.

Cuddles, the family pet and inspiration for the business.

“The idea came from my own dog, Cuddles. I love dressing her in dresses, tops and sparkly collars plus I wanted to be able to make her treats my self so I know what goes in them and where they come from,” she said.

She explained how she settled on a name for her home-run business - Spoiled Rotten Bakery.

“We have one dog, Cuddles she is our inspiration and fur baby. She is spoiled rotten so that’s where we got the name,” explained Rachel.

She says her treats are setting tails wagging and mouths drooling with pet owners ordering a range of canine treats including biscuits, cakes birthday cakes, ‘pupcakes’, frozen treats and ice cream, which she says cater for all allergies.

“Each one of our treats are made with love. I make each one to the highest of standards as I would for my own dog. We don’t use any added preservatives; everything is natural and dog friendly,” explained Rachel. “We are approved by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs. You know where your treats come from - a loving kitchen, not a factory.”

Rachel also sells what she describes as fashionable clothing and accessories at the bakery based at Fort Drive in Ballykelly.

“I have had the idea for many years now and recently learned out how short life can be, losing close family members last year. I decided to take the plunge, and go for it. I have had no financial help, so I am doing it on my own and wouldn’t have it any other way,” explained Rachel. “It is going good at the moment. I was a bit nervous some people would laugh at the idea, but the support has been fantastic.”
