A local councillor has encouraged people to be vigilant following an upsurge in ‘cold call’ marketing selling from loan companies. Sinn Féin Colr. Colly Kelly was speaking after a seriously ill Derry woman was inundated with unsolicited calls to her mobile phone from English numbers.
“This woman who is very unwell received countless phone calls each day from early morning to 6pm from numbers based in England. Each time she hung up they phoned back very quickly from another number. Her family contacted the phone company to get the numbers blocked but they said they couldn’t and that she would have to change her number,” Colr. Kelly said.
The woman’s daughter said it was upsetting for her mother. “We are very angry about this. My mother is very ill and this is the last thing she needs. The phone is her lifeline if anything goes wrong. The last thing we need is for her to knock off the phone to avoid these nuisance calls.”
