Fascinating footage of troubled Derry in the early 1970s has come to light thanks to a US man whose father came from Dungiven.
Dungiven native, Michael Kealey brought his young family home for a holiday from the USA. Armed with his camera, as well as capturing happy family scenes for posterity, he filmed disturbances around the Rossville Street/ William Street area as trouble erupted on the streets of the city.
The footage was provided by his son, Chris Kealey, who has allowed us to share it with readers, and shows young people, some in short trousers, throwing stones at soldiers and members of the RUC.
Many of the buildings, including businesses, are no longer there, and the short film will bring back many memories of the close knit communities who lived in the Bogside.
The Kealeys retain close links with their Derry relatives and friends.
